Our crew put in a lot of hard work yesterday to replace a critical connection, allowing the new Prosser Street drinking water pipe to join to the Titahi Bay water main.

We are now into the final stretch of work and expect to be fully completed before the end of July this year.
Construction commences 26 June 2023 and will be completed over the following year months in four stages to minimise traffic disruption - as shown below.
The crew is now in the final stage and we are expecting to complete works by July 2024.
Hours of work will be 7am-5pm Monday to Friday.
- Stage 1 – Titahi Bay Road to Heriot Drive. Eastbound traffic will be diverted along Heriot Drive.
- Stage 2 – Heriot Drive to Raiha Street. Traffic will be under contraflow through this section.
- Stage 3 – Raiha Street Roundabout. Eastbound traffic will be diverted around Mohuia Crescent.
- Stage 4 – Northern 180 PE Pipe Construction – Footpath and parking will be closed.
- Stage 5 – Southern 180 PE Pipe Construction – Traffic will be under contraflow.
The pipe along Prosser Street is aging and has a history of failures.
We are replacing it with a new pipe as well as carrying out some realignment at 2 Prosser Street.
This work will improve the resilience of the local network and ensure a more reliable service.
The works will require traffic restrictions and at times, parking and footpath closures. To minimise impacts we are doing the works in stages and traffic management will be in place as follows:
- Stage 1 – Titahi Bay Road to Heriot Drive. Eastbound traffic will be diverted along Heriot Drive.
- Stage 2 – Heriot Drive to Raiha Street. Traffic will be under contraflow through this section.
- Stage 3 – Raiha Street Roundabout. Eastbound traffic will be diverted around Mohuia Crescent.
- Stage 4 – Northern 180 PE Pipe Construction – Footpath and parking will be closed.
- Stage 5 – Southern 180 PE Pipe Construction – Traffic will be under contraflow.

Our crew put in a lot of hard work yesterday to replace a critical connection, allowing the new Prosser Street drinking water pipe to join to the Titahi Bay water main.
This was a massive milestone and was completed within the 12 hours expected.
During this time, the main supply was temporarily turned off, the crew excavated and exposed the existing pipe, cut in and removed the old connection, installed and secured the new pipework and were restoring the water shortly before 9pm.
In Titahi Bay, there was enough supply in the reservoirs to keep the water flowing throughout the day.
Unfortunately some premises in the CBD unexpectedly lost water when the main supply was turned off. We deeply apologise for this inconvenience. We are investigating to avoid any reoccurrence in the future.
We’re also aware that with several pipe replacement projects underway in Porirua, there’s ongoing traffic disruption along Titahi Bay Road. We’re doing our best to keep disruption to a minimum while we do this important work to secure and future proof the delivery of safe drinking water. Thanks for your patience!

Wellington Water will be undertaking a shutdown of the Titahi Bay Road trunk water supply main on Tuesday May 28 (tomorrow) to connect the new Prosser St water pipe to the Titahi Bay main.
No customers will be without water during this period however while we do this work, we must temporarily turn off the supply to the Titahi Bay drinking water reservoirs.
A trial shutdown was carried out last week and we are confident there’s enough storage in the reservoirs to keep the water flowing to the taps in Titahi Bay.
We are asking residents in Titahi Bay to conserve water on Tuesday (tomorrow), to help manage demand on the reservoirs. We’ll be monitoring the water supply closely in Titahi Bay and Takapuwahia and will send out updates during and after the shutdown.
The work will take up to 12 hours to complete, starting at 9.30 am, after the morning water use peak.
There is a lot to do to remove existing sections of pipe and install new pipes, connections and supporting infrastructure. We will be working around the intersection of Prosser Street and Titahi Bay Road and there will be traffic management in place.
While this work will cause some short-term disruption, in the long term it will contribute to more resilient infrastructure in Porirua.
We have largely completed the works across driveways and have been reinstating footpaths etc. The final pieces of work are:
- The large pipework in Titahi Bay Road
- Finalising the new connnections to various businesses
- Testing and switching supply to the new pipe work
- This may involve a short disruption to some overnight suply
- We will advise affected businesses prior to the testing and switching over
- Finishing the reinstatement of footpaths and berms.
We understand this work has been disruptive and appreciate your understanding as we work to improve your city’s infrastructure.
By the end of February 2024, the team has installed over 850m of pipe. Prosser Street businesses remained open during this work.
The team are on track to complete the work in July 2024.

And as detailed below, the works will involve some traffic disruptions:
- Stage 2 – Heriot Drive to Raiha Street. Traffic will be under ‘contraflow’ through this section, meaning traffic travelling in both directions will use one side of the road while the other side is being worked on.
- Stage 3 – Raiha Street Roundabout. Eastbound traffic will be diverted around Mohuia Crescent.
During the work, we will be crossing the intersection between Mohuia Crescent and Prosser Street. To carry out the work safely and to minimise disruption, we will close one side of the intersection at a time. Two-way traffic will be possible; however, businesses may prefer to enter and exit Mohuia at the Raiha street roundabout.
Once we have completed work to the roundabout at Raiha Street, we will return to Stage 1: Titahi Bay Road to Heriot Drive. Eastbound traffic will be diverted along Heriot Drive.
