Latest Updates

6 December 2024 Stage 1 is now complete and Stage 2 is due mid-2025

9 September 2024

As part of testing the new Titahi Bay water pipe, our team needs to do some additional works starting from Tuesday 10 September.

23 August 2024

On Monday and Tuesday August 26 and 27 there’ll be some temporary speed restrictions on Titahi Bay Road near the Elsdon Park Hockey Turf, while we do more work on the new Titahi Bay water main under the road.

The pipe will be replaced in two stages.

Stage 1, from Elsdon Park to the northern end of Tangare Drive, in the Titahi Bay Road and Tangare Drive road corridors, starts 15 January 2024 and is due to finish in late August/September. .

Stage 2, crosses land held for Ngāti Toa and the Hukarito stream to a connection point in Whanga Cres. Timing for Stage 2 is yet to be determined.

Why are we doing this?

The existing Titahi Bay trunk water main is a 225 mm asbestos cement water main laid in 1963.

This work will provide a more reliable supply of safe drinking water to homes and businesses in Titahi Bay and will reduce the risk of emergency repairs and increase earthquake resilience.

What are we doing?

The new water main will follow a new route along Tangare Drive, rather than going all the way along Titahi Bay Road, as the current pipe does.  This change in route will mean less disruption on the main access route to Titahi Bay.

The Stage 1 route has been discussed and agreed with Ngāti Toa and Porirua City Council.

All Updates

6 December 2024 Stage 1 is now complete and Stage 2 is due mid-2025

Stage 1 of this project is now complete.

Stage 2 is currently expected to start in July 2025.  The  project site office and depot alongside Tangare Drive will remain in place ready for Stage 2, as that’s more cost-effective than demobilising then  re-mobilising in 6 months’ time.

9 September 2024

We expect this work to take around two weeks to complete.

It will involve closing sections of the cycle lanes.  During the first week, the southbound cycle lane on Titahi Bay Road at the intersection turning left into Wi Neera Drive will be closed. Then the northbound lane out of Te Hiko Street for the second week.

We really appreciate your patience while we do this essential long-term work.

23 August 2024

On Monday and Tuesday August 26 and 27 there’ll be some temporary speed restrictions on Titahi Bay Road near the Elsdon Park Hockey Turf, while we do more work on the new Titahi Bay water main under the road.

Titahi Bay Road will remain open in both directions.

We’ll be operating what’s called a contraflow, a temporary traffic arrangement where lanes are ‘shifted over’ – we’ll be working in the middle of the road with lanes on both sides.

Thank you for your patience while we do this essential long-term work.

5 August 2024

Our crews have now finished laying the new main pipe under Titahi Bay Road near the Elsdon Park hockey turf. For the past three weeks there have been speed restrictions while we operated what’s called a contraflow, a temporary traffic arrangement where traffic travelling in both directions use lanes on one side of the road; effectively we shifted the lanes over to one side while we worked on the other side.

We appreciate everyone’s patience with these short-term disruptions while we make long-term improvements.

20 June 2024

Our crews have completed the important stage of laying the new main pipe under the road at the intersection with Te Hiko Street.

Big shout out to the Wellington Pipelines and Traffic Management crews who have been working overnights since 4 June to get this section complete without further disrupting traffic during the day.

There’s still more work to do but we’re due to finish work under and alongside Titahi Bay Road in August.

Thanks for your patience as we complete this important work on the pipes to secure the vital supply of drinking water to Titahi Bay.

31 May 2024

Working from both the north and the south, we have so far laid 760 metres of pipeline, out of a total of  880 metres for stage 1.

We’re close to completing work along Tangere Drive and are now approaching the milestone of crossing Titahi Bay Road, laying the new main pipe under the road at the intersection with Te Hiko Street.

From Tuesday 4 June for approximately three weeks crews will be working overnight on this section, to avoid disrupting traffic during the day.

This means  from 7 pm to  5.30 am there will be stop/go traffic control and you should expect delays.

During the day the road will be open, with trench covers over the excavations. There will be speed restrictions and traffic management around the worksites.

12 March 2024

We’re making good progress on replacing the Titahi Bay water main, which will secure and future proof the delivery of safe drinking water for the entire Titahi Bay Peninsula. The works are progressing from two sites, one from Tangare drive and one from Titahi bay road and will ‘meet in the middle’. This approach allows for a much faster project to minimise the window of disruption to residents and local businesses. Work started in January and is making good progress from both ends.

Our contractors Wellington Pipelines are working hard to provide vehicle and pedestrian access, with alternate access for foot traffic and plans in place to allow wheelchair or stroller users safe transit.
