Jervois Quay to partially reopen ahead of schedule
The Jervois Quay Stormwater Pipe repair is ahead of schedule, so much so, that commuters will be able to drive through two lanes, both northbound and southbound, 36 hours ahead of schedule.
From about 4.30pm Sunday 6 June, work will begin on re-opening four lanes of Jervois Quay in the Wellington CBD. We are expecting two lanes to be open north and southbound from around 6pm to throughfare from Taranaki Street to Whitmore Street (northbound) and from Whitmore Street to Willeston Street (southbound).
The Southbound detours will be removed from Featherston Street, Hunter Street, Victoria Street and Willeston Street and northbound drivers will be able to travel through Jervois Quay having been diverted along Lambton Quay, The Terrace and SH1.
Drivers are encouraged to take care as work to remediate the road, the traffic island, Frank Kitts Park and the pipe up Hunter Street will continue with some single lane closures and stop/go traffic management, outside of peak hours, continuing.
Wellington Water and the contractors on site would like to take the opportunity to thank the people of Wellington for their patience and courtesy while we completed the work to replace the pipe, safely reinstate the road and reduce the risk of flooding of the CBD.
“The reason why we’re able to do this is because of three reasons, good forward planning, good teamwork and execution on site.” Says Wellington Water Group Manager of Network Delivery and Development Tonia Haskell.
“We’re still asking people to be patient as work to remediate the road and Frank Kitts Park, as well as laying a further 17 metres along Hunter Street will continue for the next 6 weeks. However, we’re not expecting any significant traffic delays as a result.
“I’m exceptionally proud of what we’ve achieved in a very short amount of time with a team that have collaborated, problem solved and worked hard and effectively, to bring this project in ahead of time and with a high quality result.”
Work completed:
- The new 750mm stormwater pipeline has been laid across Jervois Quay,
- The road has been back filled, compacted and stabilized,
- Four manholes have been installed to allow access to the new pipe,
- The asphalt and road reinstatement have been completed,
- The repainting of road markings will be completed this evening.
Work upcoming in the next 6 weeks:
- The final reinstatement of the centre island on Jervois Quay
- The reinstatement and remediation of the service lane in Frank Kitts Park
- Laying a further 17 metres of stormwater pipe along Hunter Street
Road closures to remain:
- The Hunter Street turning bay will remain closed,
- Two lanes on Jervois Quay will remain closed - lane 1 southbound (next to Frank Kitts Park) and Jervois Quay - lane 6 northbound (closest to the city).
