Year 2 works are nearing completion. From Monday, April 29 our contracting team E Carson & Sons will be working in Tennyson Avenue.

9 April 2024

Taita Drive at Rosebank Avenue and Mabey Street will be down to one lane this week (April 7-12).

31 January 2024

From next week, February 7, Taita Drive between Tennyson Avenue and Mabey Road will be closed.

Current Status

The Year 2 programme of works kicked off in March 2023. This involves replacing pipes that carry wastewater along the centre of Taita Drive and across Fairway Drive in Avalon.

The Year 2 works are expected to be completed by March 2024.

Our contracting team is E Carson & Sons.

What's happening?

Over 5 years we will install 3km of new wastewater pipes and investigate another 5-8km of wastewater pipes to determine what renewal work is required.

We are working on the project in stages so we can provide more realistic timeframes and milestones and plan for the least amount of disruption.

We are about to begin the Year 2 programme of works, which involves replacing pipes that carry wastewater along the centre of Taita Drive and across Fairway Drive in Avalon.

The Year 2 works is expected to be completed by March 2024.

The goal of this work is to improve the local wastewater network’s performance, reduce the risk of emergency repairs, minimise public health risks, and reduce overflows into the environment.

Our contracting team E Carson & Sons will start works in Kingston Street from March 1, 2023.

Background

CCTV investigations in 2015/16 identified that the wastewater gravity pipes in the catchment are in poor condition with a multitude of resilience and capacity issues including:

  • Faulty, and displaced joints
  • Root intrusions and fat built up
  • Lateral problems
  • Aggregate exposed, and reinforcing corrosion in the mains
  • Dips in the sewer mains
  • Broken roof section and holed pipes
  • Capacity issues causing uncontrolled overflows to occur in this catchment yearly

The poor condition of these pipes and manholes are a public health and safety risk and poses a risk of contamination to the protected Waiwhetu aquifer.

Benefits

This project is a critical addition towards strengthening our core infrastructure and protecting our waterways. With pipes like these nearing the end of their useful lives, coupled with the growth we’ve been experiencing, our infrastructure is under pressure and it’s crucial we invest before a significant event such as an earthquake. This project builds resilience into our network, and ultimately protects our environment from wastewater overflows now and into the future

(You will receive a second notification - if the trial shutdown is successful)

What does this mean for me?

The water will be back on as soon as possible, but we recommend you fill up some containers with water before the time above and avoid running your dishwasher, washing machine or any appliances that use water.

It’s best not to use water from your hot water cylinder either as the cylinder may get damaged if the water level gets too low.
When the water supply is turned back on, it’s a good idea to open a cold tap slowly then let it run for a minute or so to clear any air bubbles that may have entered the system. Air can cause the water to turn a milky colour, but this won’t affect the taste, and should clear quickly.

If you have any questions or concerns after hours, please call the Hutt City Council Contact Centre on 04 570 6666.

Our contractors will be on site and be able to assist you with any queries during the work hours 7am-5.30pm.

27 February 2023

Kingston Street will be closed during the hours of work between 7am and 5.30pm. Kingston Street residents will have vehicle access after work hours but limited access to their properties during 7am and 5.30pm. This arrangement will be in place for two weeks – pedestrian access to Kingston Street will be maintained throughout.

Vehicle access to St James Avenue, Hart Avenue, Charleston Avenue and Allen Street will continue to be available via Stellin Street for residents, businesses, pedestrians, deliveries/couriers, and medical and emergency services.

Please note, there will be limited access to Allen St during working hours so do allow for potential delays. Cyclists can use the diversion route or dismount and walk their bikes along the footpath.

We appreciate this work will cause some disruption and we apologise for this inconvenience. We are keen to understand any concerns you have, and how best to work with you to minimise any disruption.

If your query is after hours and urgent, please contact the Hutt City Council Call Centre on 04 570 6666.

16 February 2023

At the corner of Mabey Road and Rosebank Avenue, a trench will be dug across part of the intersection. This will require temporary traffic management restrictions with a detour route via Mabey Road, Holyoake Crescent (eastbound) and Taita Drive (westbound).

Note, Northbound traffic exiting Rosebank Ave will have direct access into Mabey Road.

Please see map:

The remaining works involves excavation and replacement of the wastewater main in the grass berm on the west side of the road. No parking restrictions will apply at Mabey Road between Rosebank Ave during the works.

Access to individual residential properties between 25-33 Mabey Road will be restricted during daytime working hours (7:30am to 5:00pm) as pipes are laid across driveways/ motor-crossings.

Other works include replacement of service-connections between the new main and residential property boundaries.

19 October 2022
Contractors E Carson & Sons have been working on Taita Drive since early July installing new wastewater gravity pipes. This work will increase the resilience of the Avalon wastewater network and protect the environment as we prepare for future growth.
We know it’s been disruptive for residents but it's great to know the locals are appreciative of the hard work the crew are putting in to increase the reliability and resilience of the wastewater network. This card was dropped off to the team by one of the residents. It is safe to say this made the crew’s day! 💙

27 September 2022
We're staying on track with the recent improvement in weather and daylight saving. ☀️
The Team will be working at the corner of Taita Drive and Fairway Drive this Friday - weather permitting.⚒
This does mean there will be some temporary traffic management with lane diversions on the day between 9.30am-3pm. 🚗
Please note a 30km speed limit will be in place around the worksite. Fairway Drive traffic lanes and cycle-lanes will remain open at all times. While this is temporary, we apologise for any disruption or inconvenience this causes.

Avalon crew on a roll

31 August 2022

We’re making steady progress on Taita Drive despite the bad weather in recent weeks.

Since the project kicked off in July, we’ve installed 330 metres of new wastewater pipes and six manholes and made progress to just past the northern entrance of Avalon Studios.

Two-way traffic is back in place south of this location - great news for residents!

Work has also been completed at the intersection of Taita Drive and up Barraud Street with just footpath reinstatement and road marking to be completed.

The team will be moving towards the northern extent of the project area next, around the Taita Drive/Percy Cameron Street roundabout. There will be some additional traffic management in place while this work is being completed, but we will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.
